L'azienda farmaceutica svizzera Novartis ha reso noto che un paziente sotto trattamento con Fingolimod ha sviluppato una leucoencefalopatia multifocale progressiva, infezione cerebrale molto pericolosa. Il malato aveva assunto in precedenza un altro farmaco per il quale già in passato si era parlato di una probabile correlazione con la malattia: il tysabri.
Novartis, difatti, ha sottolineato in un comunicato che potrebbe esserci la possibilità che il Fingolimod abbia accellerato un processo patologico innescato dal tysabri mentre non sono stati registrati finora casi di leucoencefalopatia in pazienti trattati con Fingolimod e mai con Tysabri in precedenza.
L'Agenzia Europea del Farmaco ha richiesto a Novartis di presentare entro la prossima settimana un nuovo resoconto dettagliato su questo trattamento orale, per decidere se non sia il caso di sospenderne per il momento la commercializzazione.

The Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis has announced that a patient undertreatment with fingolimod has developed progressive multifocalleukoencephalopathy, cerebral infection is very dangerous. The patient hadpreviously taken another drug for which in the past there was talk of a possiblecorrelation with the disease: Tysabri.
Novartis, in fact, stressed in a statement that could be a possibility that theaccelerated Fingolimod has a pathological process triggered by the TYSABRIand were not previously recorded cases of leukoencephalopathy in patientstreated with fingolimod and never Tysabri earlier.
The European Medicines Agency has asked Novartis to submit within the nextweek a detailed account of this new oral treatment, to decide if it is not appropriateto suspend the marketing for the moment.
